Newcastle Short Story Award. Run by the Hunter Writers Centre, with a cash prize pool from local retailers and publications in the Newcastle short Story Award Anthology. Closes 4th February 2019. Entry Fee $16.50
Text Publishing: The Annual Text Prize for Young Adult & Children’s Writing. Submissions for the 2019 Text Prize will open Monday 7 January and close Friday 8 February.
The $10,000 Text Prize aims to discover incredible new books for young adults and children by Australian and New Zealand writers.
Awarded annually to the best manuscript written for young readers, the prize has unearthed extraordinary, multi-award-winning books and launched international publishing careers.
Published and unpublished writers of all ages are eligible to enter with works of fiction or non-fiction.
The winner receives a publishing contract with Text and a $10,000 advance against royalties.
Entry is now open for 2019 Calibre Essay Prize. Founded in 2007 and now worth a total of AU$7,500 the Calibre Prize is one of the world’s leading prizes for a new non-fiction essay.
Entry is open to all essayists writing in English. We are seeking essays of between 2,000 and 5,000 words on any subject. We welcome essays of all kinds: personal or political, literary or speculative, traditional or experimental.
First Prize: $5,000 Second Prize: $2,500

This year the Calibre Essay Prize will be judged by J.M. Coetzee, Anna Funder and ABREditor Peter Rose.
Open to residents of Australia and New Zealand and permanent residents, the competition is for short stories up to 3,000 words on an assigned theme.
The winner receives a cash prize of $500 and publication in Tasmania 40°South.
